American Masterpieces

Lemuel Sheppard

Kansas blues, folksinger and storyteller Lemuel Sheppard will perform a family concert inspired by Topeka artist Aaron Douglas and other artists of the Harlem Renaissance. The free concert takes place at 2:00 pm, Saturday, September 22, in Marvin Auditorium at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library (1515 SW 10th Avenue).

Sheppard has toured internationally for over 20 years, including a performance at the Kennedy Center in 2000 and performances in Brazil and South Africa.  His repertoire includes West African folk music, spirituals, traditional acoustic blues and jazz standards. 

This concert is funded by the Kansas Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts’ American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of American Genius. It is alsopresented in affiliation with the University of Kansas’s Spencer Museum of Art, whose exhibit Aaron Douglas: African American Modernist celebrates the work of the famous visual artist from Topeka, on view September 8 - December 2, 2007. Native Threads

Native Threads, a touring quilt exhibit showcasing the native artistry of Kansas Native American quilters, is being presented in six venues throughout Kansas.

The Kansas Arts Commission, working with Mid-America Arts Alliance, developed the Native Threads exhibit to expose Kansas audiences to the excellence, variety and richness of Native American culture as expressed by contemporary textile artists.

The exhibit is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts’ American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius program, Mid-America Arts Alliance, a private, nonprofit regional service organization located in Kansas City, MO., and the Kansas Arts Commission.
