The arts are vital to the education of children. The National Governors’ Commission on the Arts in Education (Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, Chair) concluded that that there are significant benefits to the arts in education, including:

Improved performance in reading and math
Students who take arts courses have higher math, verbal and overall SAT scores and receive higher grades than students who do not take arts classes.

Improved student engagement and motivation in school
Students who are involved in the arts are more engaged in school, more motivated, have higher attendance rates and higher educational aspirations than those who are not.

Improving the Assessment of Student Learning in the Arts

The National Endowment for the Arts is embarking on a new project to help arts organizations, schools and others learn to do effective evaluation of student learning. Through this project, the Arts Endowment seeks to collect and analyze information on current practices and trends in the assessment of K-12 student learning in the arts and to identify models that might be most effective in various learning environments. Improved social and civic development
Students exposed to the arts gain more empathy and self-control and develop improved conflict-resolution and social-tolerance skills than those are who not.

Enhanced economic development and workforce preparation
Students who are educated in the arts demonstrate creative thinking, flexibility and adaptability as well as enhanced academic skills. These are attributes necessary to the building of creative and innovative economies.

Improved school climate
The arts have been shown to create a more positive school culture while strengthening schools’ ties to surrounding neighborhoods and communities.

The Kansas Arts Commission supports the arts in education through a number of initiatives, including support for artists and organizations that work in school, after school and community settings, enhancing the curriculum and guiding teachers in integrating the arts into their classrooms.
