Step 2: Selection Process and Criteria

Award recipients will be selected by a panel that includes Kansas Arts Commissioners, a representative of the Governor and representatives from various arts disciplines and organizations. At the discretion of the panel, more than one award in a category may be given or the panel may select the top scoring nominations regardless of category. The panel may decide not to award in every category if the final score does not merit an award. Panelists are instructed to score on the content in the nomination packet only, not on any prior knowledge of the nominee. The criteria the panel will use to rank and select awards are worth a total of 25 points.

The selection panel will meet in November 9, 2010.

Selection Criteria for Artists, Arts Organizations and Arts-in-Education:

  • Artistic Distinction and Merit (maximum 10 points): superiority and quality of work.

  • Recognition of Artistic or Community Contribution (maximum 5 points): demonstration of strong community and artistic impact through previous honors and awards; critical reviews about the artist's or organization’s work; and media publications, feature stories or reviews of the nominee.

  • Artistic and Community Leadership (maximum 5 points): demonstration of community involvement at a leadership level through activities such as mentoring and providing guidance to others; serving as a catalyst for increased community and artistic involvement; service in formal leadership roles in professional associations and partnerships.

  • Dedication and Intensity of Activity (maximum 5 points): exhibition, production or publication history; work and volunteer history; length of involvement.

Selection Criteria for Arts Advocates, Arts Patrons and Arts Communities:

  • Community and Artistic Leadership (maximum 15 points): demonstration of community involvement at a leadership level through significant contributions of financial support, time, advocacy and engagement with the arts and culture in one or more communities in Kansas.

  • Recognition of Contribution (maximum 5 points): demonstration of strong community impact through previous honors, awards and media publications or feature stories about the nominee.

  • Dedication and Intensity of Activity (maximum 5 points): volunteer history and length of involvement.

Nominations receiving less than 20 points will not be considered for an award.
