  • Accessibility Checklist – An evaluation form designed to identify physical, programmatic and employment barriers that prevent full participation of individuals with disabilities. May be downloaded online.

  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) – A federal law passed in 1990 that provides for nondiscrimination for persons with disabilities in employment and public accommodations. ADA regulations provide specifications for architectural and programmatic accessibility for persons with disabilities that substantially restrict routine living.

  • Arts Presenter – An organization that plans, schedules and offers to the public arts events, performances, workshops and other arts activities using artists other than those directly associated with the organization.

  • Arts Producer – A single-discipline or multi-discipline arts organization that plans, rehearses, and produces arts programs from within its own structure, using artists directly associated with the organization.

  • Authorizing Official – The individual authorized by the organization to enter into contracts on behalf of the organization, such as the executive director, board chairman, board president, school principal or school superintendent.

  • Conflict of Interest – An individual has a conflict of interest when he or she is in a decision-making position concerning an organization in which he or she has substantial interest. Substantial interest is determined by whether the individual or a family member receives financial benefits, is a board or staff member or may profit in any way from the organization.

  • Consultant – A person who provides professional advice and services and is employed by the organization as an independent contractor.

  • Culturally Specific – Representative of a single cultural group, such as African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic or Latino, Native-American, Alaskan Native or Pacific Islander.

  • Domestic Corporation – A Kansas corporation that qualifies under the Kansas Secretary of State's guidelines.

  • DUNS Number – A unique, nine-digit sequence assigned by Dun and Bradstreet, the world's leading business information provider, recognized as the universal standard for identifying and tracking businesses.

  • Emerging Organization – Organizations that have or have been incorporated for three years or less.

  • Financial Statement – A document that indicates the financial status of an organization, reflecting the organization’s entire fiscal year and including itemized income and expenses, and beginning and ending fund balances.

  • Fiscal Sponsor – An incorporated nonprofit organization that assumes fiscal and contractual responsibility for specific activities on behalf of another organization that is not legally organized as a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization. Also known as a fiscal agent or fiscal receiver.

  • Foreign Corporation – A corporation conducting business in one state when incorporated or chartered in another.

  • Government Agency – Department, division or agency of city, county, state, tribal or federal government.

  • In-Kind Contribution – Items or services provided to an organization by volunteers or other organizations, businesses or individuals at no cash cost. To be considered in-kind contributions, donated goods and services must be necessary to the organization; that is, goods or services that the organization would purchase if not donated. In-kind volunteer time is valued at $17.79 per hour.

  • Multicultural Organization – An organization that has a board, membership, staff or serves an audience or population that is 51% or more African American, Asian American, Hispanic or Latino, Native American, Alaskan Native, Pacific Islander or any isolated ethnic community or group.

  • Nonprofit Organization – An organization serving the public good that legally is organized and registered as a not-for-profit corporation with the Kansas Secretary of State. Nonprofits do not pay income taxes and have no individual owners or shareholders. Profits are utilized by the organization for projects, operations or endowment. In Kansas, nonprofits pay sales and payroll taxes.

  • Operational Support – Funds provided to support an organization’s general operating budget including both administrative and programming activities.

  • Program – An ongoing event or undertaking that occurs over the course of a set time-frame.

  • Project – A single planned event or undertaking that may occur one time or be repeated more than one time. A project may have more than one component but involves the same artist or artists, and is planned, coordinated and implemented by the same producer. A producer may be an individual organization or a group.

  • Project Director – The individual authorized by the organization to oversee, coordinate or produce the project for which the organization is applying. This individual may be a paid staff member or a volunteer.

  • Rural Community – Any Kansas town, city or area that is not located in one of the counties listed under the definition for Urban Community.

  • Tax-Exempt, Charitable Organization – An organization that has income tax-exempt status with the federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a 50l(c)3 organization, and has been assigned a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN).

  • Underserved Community – A community in which people lack access to arts programs, services, or resources because of geographic, economic, cultural, sociopolitical, physical or other reasons. The term “community” may be defined geographically or may refer to a group of people with a common heritage or characteristics, whether or not they live in the same place.

  • Urban Community – Any Kansas town, city or area located in one of the following counties with populations over 50,000: Butler, Douglas, Johnson, Leavenworth, Reno, Riley, Saline, Shawnee, Sedgwick and Wyandotte. The Kansas Arts Commission utilizes the most recent information provided by the Census Bureau.
