Kansas Arts on Tour Roster - Dance and Movement Theatre
940 Dance Company
The 940 Dance Company is a professional contemporary dance company dedicated to exploring and sharing the commonality of human experience through movement. With a twenty year history and six highly-skilled dancers under the artistic direction of award-winning choreographer Susan Rieger, 940 offers a versatile and accessible repertory that has consistently delighted audiences with its variety of themes and music.
Equally at home on the concert stage, a gymnasium full of youth, or an unlikely site, such as a farm field or parking garage, the 940 Dance Company is committed to bringing the magic of dance to communities throughout the Midwest. The six dancers hold degrees from excellent conservatory and college programs, with years of professional performance experience. Director Susan Rieger has received a Kennedy Center Award for Achievement in choreography and her work has been favorably reviewed in Dance Magazine, The Kansas City Star and The Lawrence Journal-World.
Program Descriptions
- Community Concerts (90 minutes, all ages): This company has gained recognition for performances filled with humor, drama and beauty. The current repertory includes: Chair Suite, innovative solo, duet and group dancing with chairs; Tomorrow, Greener Grass, a lovely work that traverses adversity to arrive at hope; and Diplomacy, an athletic battle danced around a board room table.
- Word Dance (50 minutes, elementary schools): This school program is designed to improve literacy and demonstrate the joy of dance. “Word Dance was one of the best instructional performances we’ve had. It was appropriate, interesting and educational.” (educator, KCKS). The five dancers introduce letters, poetry, sentence structure and a well-known folktale in an informative, entertaining manner.
- In the Moment (50 minutes, middle/high school): This program features improvisational dance. The dancers demonstrate creative thinking, risk-taking, and problem-solving. It also highlights concepts which cross all arts disciplines, such as structure, composition, repetition, contrast, and rhythm.
- Inside Dance (50 minutes, middle/high school): This lecture/demonstration introduces students to the world of a dancer; training, history of dance, and how choreographers make choices to communicate specific ideas. This program emphasizes critical thinking, used daily by choreographers and active viewers of dance.
- Workshops (50 minutes, all ages): Workshops include creative movement, modern dance technique and dance improvisation. The workshops can be paired with performances or offered independently.
