Ballet Wichita

Ballet Wichita

Program Descriptions

  • The Nutcracker (2 hours): For the past 30 years, the Metropolitan Ballet of Wichita has presented the wonderful holiday ballet The Nutcracker to audiences throughout Kansas. The ballet has a cast of 70 dancers and full theatrical sets.
  • Prairie Tale (1 hour): Prairie Tale is an original one-hour ballet about a monarch butterfly’s journey across Kansas. As the butterfly makes her way across the state, she encounters sunflowers, buffalo, meadowlarks and a Kansas thunderstorm. This entertaining and educational ballet is performed to the acoustical bluegrass style music of Grandpa’s .38 with Tom Page and Pat McElmurray.

Note: Jill Landrith, the Metropolitan Ballet’s artistic director, will present a lecture demonstration on dance. Educational materials will be available to encourage further discussion of Kansas themes for young audiences.

Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary. — Cecil Beaton
