Nritya School of Indian Dance and Music
Nritya School of Indian Dance and Music

Nritya is a versatile company of dancers who work primarily in the South Indian classical dance style called Bharatha Natyam. Based in both rhythm and lyricism, Bharatha Natyam involves the use of the whole body, including dramatic facial expressions, to convey emotions or perform intricate step sequences. Through the combining of modern themes and theatrical techniques with yoga and the traditional Bharatha Natyam repertoire, Nritya produces dynamic, captivating programs for all ages. Programs can include educational components about the evolution of Indian dance or the themes presented.

Program Descriptions

  • Dances of Nature (75 minutes): Interprets the different elements and essences of the Universe through abstract dance and poetics. This program features nine principal dancers and twelve young company members.
  • Bharathanatyam Margam (30-120 minutes): This program includes both abstract dance and story-telling pieces in the traditional Bharatha Natyam style. This program is particularly appropriate for school and community outreach performances and provides a wonderful introduction to Bharatha Natyam and Indian folk dance. (can include one to six dancers as preferred).

Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary. — Cecil Beaton
