Ms. Jean is a retired librarian and the founder of the Wichita Griots, a local group of storytellers known for their commitment to children and outreach in the Wichita community. In her stories, Ms. Jean passes on moral values and character development traits such as respect, cooperation, honesty, responsibility and teamwork. Jean Pouncil-Burton was designated “the official storyteller” of Wichita, by former Mayor Bob Knight. She was also honored by City Manager Chris Cherches for an innovative cultural diversity program she implemented at the Wichita Public Library.

Program Descriptions

Ms. Jean uses djembe drums, sherkere and a mesmerizing voice to make stories come alive. The Topeka Capital-Journal has deemed Ms. Jean as a “storyteller who paints with words.” Children and adults are captivated by her stories as she embellishes her presentations with African instruments.
