Richard Pitts

Richard Camara Pitts is an African-American storyteller and drummer. Camara’s stories are derived from the rich West Africa and African-American folktales, legends and histories of the people who came to North American shores centuries ago.

Program Descriptions

The African hand drummers from Nigeria, Sengal and Mali influence his drumming performances called “Roots of Rhythm.” His performance is an exercise in African-American storytelling, drumming and history that is educational and fun. Richard’s goal is to share and educate his audience about the origins of African-American culture as well as historical events that helped to transform our beautiful country into what is today. Each program is suited for ages first grade to adult. Stories and information presented are developmentally appropriate for each age group. Program Lengths: 30-45 minutes.

Performance Fees
  • 30 to 45-minute performance: $350
  • Two performances: $600
  • Full-day storytelling workshop or three performances: $900
  • One-week residency: $2,500
Technical Requirements
  • A microphone and chair are required but not in all situations (depending on size and location).
