Nomination Form and Guidelines

The Poet Laureate of Kansas is part of the national cultural tradition of officially honoring a citizen poet of exceptional talent and accomplishment who promotes and encourages broad appreciation of poetry.
 
The Poet Laureate of Kansas serves a term of two fiscal years beginning July 1, 2009 and ending June 30, 2011. In exchange for an honorarium of $2,500 per year, the Poet Laureate is expected to:

  • Create and implement a statewide educational or outreach poetry program of his or her own choosing with an annual budget of $2,500, subject to the approval of the Kansas Arts Commission.
  • Make public appearances across the state as a member of the Kansas Arts on Tour Roster that may be underwritten through the Kansas Arts on Tour Program.
  • Serve as an advisor and judge at the annual Poetry Out Loud competition sponsored in part by the Kansas Arts Commission each spring.
  • Make appearances, read at and potentially write poetry for official state functions such as the Governor’s Arts Awards and the opening of the Legislative session.
