The Tallgrass Trio was formed in 2006 and has quickly become a popular ensemble in northeast Kansas, performing both classical and lighter fare in a variety of settings. Trio members include violinist Kristin Mortenson, Kansas State University music faculty member and associate concertmaster of the Topeka Symphony; clarinetist Susan Gartner, Wamego Public School band director; and bassoonist Susan Maxwell, Kansas State University music faculty member and principal bassoon of the North Arkansas Symphony.

Classical Beauty
Standard composers of classical music.

A Night at the Opera
Arrangements of arias from well-known operas.

Wearin' O' The Green
Traditional Irish fare.

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blues-y
Standard older and contemporary works, works "borrowed" from other ensemble configurations, and one Blues work that was arranged for the trio by Steve Marshall.

If it Ain't Baroque
Famous composers from the Baroque period.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like
Standard Christmas and holiday classics.

The trio also often presents interactive children’s programs chosen from Peanut Goes to Europe or Peanut Tours American History, both of which feature the adventures of a fun-loving dog named Peanut as he travels the country and the world. 

Work Samples

Program Fees

  • Concert performance: $1,200

  • School concert performance: $1,200 - $1,800
    Schools are encouraged to share in fees, as the Tallgrass Trio can visit a number of schools in one city during a school day.

Technical Requirements

  • Lighting: adequate for reading sheet music

  • Sound: for educational concerts, include a microphone and stand

  • Other: three straight-backed armless chairs; appropriate venue temperature between 65F - 85F
